Should You Twitter Your Business?

April 30th 2009

There’ s no question that Twitter has become the next big thing in internet social networking. Yet to this day, less than 10% of North American internet users actually “Twitter.” But unique visitors the Twitter website has grown over 1300 % in one year.

So what exactly is Twitter?

Twitter is an automated service for sharing of short 140 character communications. Why 140? So that you can send “tweets,” or communications from your cell phone as well as your computer. Most celebrities have a twitter channel as part of their marketing and promotion. And now businesses are seeing Twitter as a business tool.

Some feel that Twitter is just a vehicle to kill time, filing any moment with useless drivel. But does it serve a deeper need?  Moses Ma, writing in Psychology Today believes it does. He says that we are living in a culture starved for real community, which is a message that Robert Putnam gave us in Bowling Alone. Our brains have been biologically hard-wired to operate within a social community, but the industrial age and its extension, free market capitalism has weakened those bonds. People are compelled to tweet, facebook, and to email as well as meet face to face, because they crave social connection.

The critics of Twitter would argue that it is a near perfect example of an intermittent variable reward, a key addictive element of slot machines, and Twitter can trick the brain into thinking its having a meaningful social interaction when you actually aren’t, and finally, Twitter can add to the already recognized problem of overwhelm through multi-tasking, reducing your ability to perform.

The proponents of  Twitter would argue that Twitter, like all social networking, aims primarily at social needs, like those for belonging, love and friendship. At  higher level, Ma suggests, Twitter is related to self-esteem and social recognition. Twitter allows normal people to feel like celebrities. You get a following, and people “like you.” Dr. David Lewis, a cognitive neuropsychologist at the University of Sussex argues that Twitter helps people feel less insecure.

So do people use Twitter to self-actualize, the highest human need according to Maslow? Deepak Chopra and Tony Robbins and scores of other personal growth and spiritual gurus have twitters. Or are they just exercising a new form of smart marketing and promotion of their products?

One way to look at Twitters is what is the impact if you participate. Are you just adding to the crushing weight of spam and useless garbage already out there in cyberspace, or are you participating in  great planetary social experiment that will help us all evolve into better human beings?

Ma would argue that being in the “twitterverse” is like a rive of human awareness, composed of billions of 140 character molecules, each a snapshot of life or thought or reflection, and that river of pure information equals energy in the quantum universe.  And therefore it is a good thing.

Given that as a background, will Twitter go the direction that Facebook is now heading, and become a new vehicle for business marketing and promotion, and the distribution of unedited news and information?

What is Twitter? Social Networking For Business

April 29th 2009

So what’s all the talk about Twitter?

This site has been featured in a lots of places and is now pretty high profile but a lot of people still don’t know what “microblogging” is . Well I can tell you it’s great for start up business and freelance consultants.

So why is it worth giving this some thought?

Well, here are three reasons:

• It’s a useful way to share your messages and you interests
• It’s a good way to communicate with potential customers and partners
• It’s also a really useful place to go to research your market

It works by people posting ‘microblogs’ (up to 140 characters only) called ‘tweets”. But to maximize the usefulness of Twitter for your business, you should to understand how to find people to “follow” you and how to get “followed”.

Here are three ways to connect with people:

1. Go to Twitter Search, and enter the words related to your product or business into the search area. Twitter Search will show you the “tweets” that include all those words, as well as the people who use them. Then click to their profiles, and check if they are people you’d like to “follow”!

2. Check through the “Follows” and “Following” lists of the profiles of anyone you follow to see if you spot anyone you want to follow!

3. Check the conversations in your Twitter stream You can see who people are talking to from the “@NameHere” in each tweet. If you see people having an interesting exchange, follow them, or get yourself involved in the conversation by using the @ function yourself! If you see an interesting tweet, you can reply automatically by clicking the little arrow within the tweet box.

Once you have followed some people, you can make your Twitter experience more enjoyable - and to connect more effectively with other users!

1. Don’t request that people to follow you: People who do this others don’t usually succeed at getting ANYONE to follow them. Try to be interesting and informative and be responsive to others… people will follow you if they value how you use Twitter

2. Sharing information - Do not make pitches for your products and services: As with any social media platform, as in business, you want to build credibility and good relationships - instead of always asking people to buy from you

3. If you see someone post a link you like, “re-tweet” it: - just copy their message paste it into a new tweet, and add ‘ RT’ at the beginning. This is a good way to show someone you value what they have to say … by sharing it with your community.

4. Watch how other people use Twitter: A useful way to figure out your place in a community is to follow those people you admire.

That should be enough to get you started! Make sure to follow me.

The Facebook Frenzy - And How Your Business Can Benefit

April 9th 2009

Here’s a little tip. If you’re the daughter of a presidential candidate and you decide to support the opponent, don’t make it public through social networking.

Back when the election was in its infant stages, Rudy Giuliani’s daughter, Caroline, decided it was time to update her Facebook profile. She set her political views as “liberal” and joined the group “One Million Strong for Barack” a fan page for Barack Obama supporters.

The media was all over the social networking profile like flies to a picnic.

We could go through all the do’s and don’ts of social networking but the overall message in all of this: social networking websites are an effective way to get your message across and meet other people with similar interests.

According to comScore, a marketing research company serving many of the Internet’s largest businesses, Facebook is the leading social networking site based on monthly unique visitors, having overtaken main competitor MySpace in April 2008. ComScore reports that Facebook attracted 132.1 million unique visitors in June 2008, compared to MySpace, which attracted 117.6 million.

And to clear up the myth that Facebook is just for “young people,” the website boasts membership that includes the likes Fortune 500 businessmen, celebrities, political leaders, musicians and everybody in between.

While on Facebook, you can join fan pages for your favorite television show, celebrity, musician, local celebrity. There are groups for people interested in everything from fly fishing to reading the Harry Potter series. And on the more professional side of things … there are countless opportunities for networking.

There are other “business social networking sites” the most common of which is Linkedin, which is good but strictly business. The site lacks the ability to show your true colors. While this may be good when looking for a new career, ultimately your true colors will eventually shine through anyway, so if you lead a relatively normal life, networking and expressing your individuality on Facebook shouldn’t pose too much of a business risk.

To navigate your way through this economic storm will require creativity, determination, innovation, strong communication skills and the ability to do some very clever networking. Using social networking tools is the perfect launch pad from which to present yourself to the professional world. As a matter of fact, the HR recruiter who initially brought me to Denver first met me … on Facebook.

So are you ready to catch the Facebook frenzy? Be sure to add me as a friend!

How to Recruit a Web Agency For Your Business

March 16th 2009

When you approach a web agency to help you deal with the online side of your business you need to make sure that you choose the right company for your requirements. As the company will be working for you, you should take a similar approach to hiring them as a manager would approach recruiting a new member of staff. Employers responsible for recruiting staff wouldn’t look at one CV and give that person a job or just rely on references and not actually meet them. It’s wise to go through a thorough recruitment process when you hire a company to handle your online projects.

The CV

A company’s website is in effect their CV as it lists their strengths, talents, past projects and even a bit about their personality usually found on the ‘About Us’ page. Take the time to go through a number of agency websites and make note of what services they offer and what evidence they have to back up their talents. For example, some websites will feature case studies and break downs of specific projects which the company have completed. Some will have a full list of past clients with links to the completed website projects or images and details from marketing campaigns. If you need more examples then email the company and ask, you could even ask them for specific results of increased visitors or sales from particular campaigns.

The References

Testimonials are the equivalent of references and they can be a great way to find out how well a company works. Most agency websites will feature a number of testimonials from past and present clients so make sure you read these to get an idea of whether the company is right for you. If the company doesn’t have any or very few testimonials then this could be because they’re new or it could be because they’re not very good. If you like the look of a company but they only have a few testimonials give them a call so you can find out why this is. You could even do further research by contacting some of their clients and finding out direct how satisfied they were with the web agency.

The Interview

When you’ve narrowed your search down you could then call the agency or even pop in and see them to get an idea of how well you’ll work together. Working with an agency can sometimes be a long-term relationship so you need to feel comfortable with the staff at the agency and with the way the agency work. Draw up a list of questions to ask them, even if you think some might be silly or too prying, you have a right to know as much about the company as possible if you’re going to invest money in their services. Find out who will be your main point of contact and who will do most of the work on your project - these are the people you’ll speak to most so it’s vital that you feel comfortable with them.

By hiring a web company in the same way you would hire a member of staff, you can ensure that you know as much as possible about the company and therefore avoid any nasty surprises further down the line.

Three Steps to Instantly Set Your Web Development Business

March 3rd 2009

You have heard employee layoff news lately and you might be wondering whether you will be able to retain your day job during this economic downturn. Every one of us needs security in which means getting better salary, job promotion and brighter prospect. In this moment, you are feeling insecure about your future as you are required to work more than usual and you are still getting the same salary.

If you have web development skills, you are capable to prosper by setting your own business. Initially, it requires proper planning and procedures if you want to start your own business within short period of time.

Step 1: Start researching for information from related resources

You have to use your internet search engine browser to seek suitable information about setting up your new business. Therefore, you need more time to filter out irrelevant information as well as gather all the relevant information in your computer. It could probably takes few hours (perhaps less than 48 hours) to compile the important information about small business startups.

It is plausible to set up an emergency fund first so you can have some money aside for the dry spells which can occur in any business. You can also try not to leave your day job before the business is well set and brings you a regular amount of money. This will also help you gain more leverage over clients because you will not sound desperate.

Step 2: Start doing freelancing work in the beginning

Operating your business can be done at home and it is not necessary for you to rent an office. You have to reduce your startup cost as low as possible and renting a small office room can be indeed costly. In this moment, it is normal that you work at home and you will be able to have a casual working environment that can boost your productivity at work.

Step 3: Start looking for clients

You need to start searching for clients via internet marketing forums. This is how you promote or offer your service to the forum members. Other than that, you can also advertise your web development service via free classifieds website like Craiglists.

Internet Home Based Business - 4 Tips to Writing a Squeeze Page That Sells Like Crazy! Part 2

February 20th 2009

In part 1 of this article I discussed 5 critical points for any internet home based business owner to making a squeeze page that sells like crazy whether it’s a subscriber list you’re trying to build or a product your trying to sell.

Here are the 5 main points I discussed: define your purpose clearly, use a single page for a related keyword set, make your headline with the benefits included, K.I.S.S. your webpage design - (Keep It Simple Sweetheart), and use catch phrases in your sales copy. See part 1 for the full explanation. Here are the last 4 tips:

1. Make sure it all flows

As an internet home based business owner it drives me up the wall when I read a sales page and there is one thought that seems to train wreck itself into another thought. You want to make sure you are walking your visitors by the hand through your sales copy. It helps tremendously to read and re-read your squeeze page over and over and over. This way you can stop a collision from occurring with your thoughts.

2. Spread the call to action around

Think of this in terms of a spreader you would use to fertilize your grass. When you walk in a row it throws the seeds in multiple locations in front, to the left, and the right. Well, in an internet home based business the same applies to your squeeze page. I suggest using a “join now”, “sign me up’, or “buy now”, link or button in the middle and the end of your page.

Another prominent spot to place the call to action is in the “p.s.” Think of this as the “last call” opportunity to hook, line, and sink your potential visitor.

If your squeeze page copy is compelling enough it can actually pull potential subscribers and/or buyers in the middle of the page. People are different and you never know how little or how much it takes to convert someone.

3. Create urgency in the reader’s mind

One-time only offers work great for upsells and even initial sales in any internet home based business. Another tactic is to create a bundle offer. Whichever route you take be sure to follow through with it. If you say it’ll be around for 2 days be sure to stick to that. If you don’t, you stand a good chance of losing credibility.

Be sure to flat out tell the visitor that you will be taking the offer down in 2 days and that they need to act now or else they’ll miss out.

You could even raise the price every 15 or 20 sales. This will create a jolt of urgency in the visitor and will cause them to hesitate at passing up your offer because it may be even more expensive the next time around.

4. Provide a photo of yourself

“Say cheese!” I recommend this to any internet home based business owner. Having your picture on the web page builds a significant amount of trust with your visitor. It shows them that you actually exist and that you understand the value of your product and that you’re willing to “show up” for it.

Follow these 4 simple tips and you’re bound to have great success in your internet home based business. Writing squeeze pages doesn’t have to be hard. Follow these principles and it won’t be long until you’re able to enjoy new subscribers and sales.

I run a profitable home based business and I’d like to show you how to do the same.
